As COVID-19 measures are relaxed, more campus events are taking place face-to-face once again. This semester the Student Union has a Sports Festival and Freshman Talent Content planned. This announcement gives a brief overview of the Woosong University Student Union and Department Student Councils, what they do, and how to contact them, so you can find out more about the events they are holding and how to join them.
Woosong University Student Union (총학생회)
Woosong University Student Union is a university-level organisation. In Korea, student unions are separated from university management and are run by - and for - students The Student Union leadership is made up of representatives of each department in the University (via the student councils). The Student Union organises university-wide events like Sports Day, Fall Festival and Culture Day.
For the year 2023-2024, the 29th Woosong University Student Union have chosen the theme 해일 or Haeil (translated as tsunami or big wave). In their introduction they say: "we do not want to settle for meeting your expectations, but rather aim to bring greater satisfaction". More information can be found on their Instagram.
The Student Union fee is collected along with the tuition fee and insurance fee at the start of the semester. The rate is currently 28,000 KRW ($28) per year. It is voluntary to pay it, but only those who pay the fee can participate in events run by the Student Union.
Departmental Student Councils (학생회)
Each department also has a Student Council. The Student Council is the department-level student representative body. The department student councils are the link between the Student Union and students, so are the first place to go for information about Student Union events. They also run departmental events for students, for example learning concerts, meals and parties, and order department jackets.
Each department student council has representatives/contact persons. You may have already heard from your Student Council by social media or at the International Student Orientation, but if not, the details of each representative will be sent by email. As the contact persons are fellow students, the student councils appreciate your respect and understanding in your communication.
The Student Council fee is collected directly by the department student councils. Just like with the Student Union, the fee is voluntary, but those who do not pay cannot participate in events run by the Student Council.
If you have any questions about paying the fee or participating in any events, contact the Student Union or your Department Student Council directly.
