This is an update for enrolled students about immigration regulations pertaining to all international students in the Republic of Korea as set out during the International Student Orientation, in particular regarding Residence Card application, extension and work permit.
(1) Residence Card Application: Anyone staying in Korea for more than 90 days (i.e., for work, study, etc.) is required to apply for a Residence Card (formerly known as ARC). It is illegal to stay in Korea for more than 90 days without being registered, regardless of the validity period of the visa (e.g., D-2 Student Visa) used at entry. Therefore, if you have recently arrived in the Republic of Korea and have not applied for a Residence Card, please do so immediately.
(2) Residence Card Extension: Students who already have their Residence Card (formerly known as ARC) must take careful note of the expiry date of their stay written on the back. Ensure you apply for an extension before it expires, since individuals are responsible for the extension.
(3) Residence Card Cancellation: If a student is no longer an enrolled student, for example because they withdraw, take leave of absence or are expelled, the Residence Card is cancelled and they should leave the Republic of Korea within 14 working days.
(4) Work Permit: If you plan to get a part-time job in Korea, it is important to note the following important information:
- Before embarking on any kind of part-time work, students must apply for a work permit from Korean Immigration.
- Students cannot work during their first semester in Korea. There are also restrictions on the number of hours students can work each week. This is so students can focus on their studies.
- Certain kinds of employment (eg., parcel service - 택배) without a valid work permit are considered illegal employment as they are not permitted on a Student Visa, and can result in deportation.
