Part-Time Work Update

Writer : ISS Team | Date : 2023.06.27 | Hit : 2,389

**This information is applicable to enrolled undergraduate students, and excludes graduate students**

With the semester over and the summer vacation beginning, many students will be looking for part-time work. All those on a student visa (D-2-2) must get permission both from their university and from Korea Immigration before they start work. Read on for further details.

Eligibility

Full-time enrolled students may apply for permission for part-time work whilst they study as long as the following requirements are met:

- Full-time student with valid Residence Card (D-2-2)

- CGPA over 2.0 in the previous semester (on date of application)

- Must not be in first semester of study (this includes exchange/study abroad/visiting students)

- Must not be in excess semesters (i.e. not in ninth semester of study or over)

Application Process

- Find a part-time job and get necessary paperwork from the employer. Woosong University cannot offer any assistance in finding part-time work, but some students in the past have found Korea International Student Association (KINSA) and Incruit a helping hand.

- Visit Woosong University Visa Office (W3 105) to apply for permission from Korea Immigration Service

- Begin work only once permission is granted (there is a fine for starting before permission is granted)

Restrictions on Work

There are restrictions both on the type of work students can complete as well as the number of hours. This is primarily to keep students safe and so they can focus on their studies.

Hours of Work

Undergraduate students should work less than 20 hours per week during semester time. This restriction is usually lifted during weekends, holidays and vacations.

Up to 25 hours per week is permitted for international students with a higher CGPA in the previous semester and a particular official TOPIK score. Check with Korea Immigration Service for updated information.

Only 10 hours per week is permitted for those who have less than TOPIK 4, or for those in English-language programs who do not meet the English proficiency level (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent).

Examples of Allowed Types of Part-Time Work (permission still needed):

Change in Workplace

Penalty for Working Without Permission

Failure to get official permission to work part-time can be serious. It can include a fine anywhere from 2,000,000 KRW to 30,000,000 KRW, depending on the length of time of working illegally. It can also cause non-renewal of visa or difficulty getting a work visa in the future.
